Our mission at Wild Rivers Habitat for Humanity is to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. With high housing costs and living expenses, affordable housing solutions are more crucial than ever. We’re dedicated to creating a more fair housing market, but we need your support. Let’s join forces and advocate for policies that promote affordable housing, so that everyone has a safe place to call home.
Our work is guided by a set of core values, including compassion, integrity, and collaboration. We believe that by upholding these values, we can create meaningful and sustainable change in our community.
Keeping homes affordable and livable long term, ensuring homeowner resilience
Even established homeowners can face costs they can’t afford. They may need a costly, critical repair, such as replacing a leaking roof. They may face unaffordable insurance or property taxes. As their house and insulation become dated, they may experience spiking energy bills. They may need a wheelchair ramp as they age. We support policies that help homeowners stay in their homes and homes stay in a family.
How? We advocate for policymakers act to:
Support Legislative Outreach
You can help take important issues related to our work straight to our elected officials, ensuring our message reaches the places where decisions are made. Our commitment to nonpartisan advocacy is strong, and we consistently find support for affordable housing from elected officials across all political parties.

AmeriCorps has long been a cornerstone of national service—mobilizing volunteers to support disaster recovery, education, and community development across the country. In April 2025, the Trump administration placed approximately 75% of full-time AmeriCorps employees on administrative leave and abruptly ended the National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) program, displacing more than 2,000 young volunteers mid-service (AP News).
For Wild Rivers Habitat for Humanity, the termination of the NCCC program has had a direct and significant impact. We were scheduled to host a team of 8–10 AmeriCorps NCCC members to assist with:
This support was not only hands-on—it was transformative. These teams bring energy, capacity, and skills to help us serve more families across our rural region.
The cancellation of the NCCC deployment left a gap in our volunteer force that we are now struggling to fill. Without these national service members, projects are delayed, costs increase, and our ability to meet growing community need is reduced.
We are calling on Congress to restore funding and staffing to AmeriCorps programs—including NCCC—so that rural communities like ours are not left behind.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) plays a crucial role in supporting rural homeownership through programs like the Section 502 Direct Loan and Housing Preservation Grant (HPG). However, recent federal staffing cuts have significantly disrupted these services. In Wisconsin, some USDA Rural Development offices are operating at half the staffing levels of a few months ago. The decreased capacity has resulted in a backlog of home loan and repair applications, leaving many families in limbo. These delays are particularly detrimental in areas like ours, where alternative housing assistance options are limited.
Wild Rivers Habitat for Humanity actively collaborates with USDA programs to support our mission. We provide loan packaging services to assist applicants in navigating the USDA’s Section 502 Direct Loan process, ensuring all necessary documentation is submitted and requirements are met . Additionally, we have been awarded a $100,000 USDA Housing Preservation Grant, enabling us to offer critical home rehabilitation and repairs in Washburn County and surrounding areas .
The recent USDA staffing cuts threaten these collaborative efforts, potentially leaving vulnerable families without access to essential housing support. It's imperative to advocate for the restoration of USDA staffing and resources to continue providing these vital services to our rural communities.

On April 1, 2025, the federal government terminated all staff administering the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), jeopardizing $378 million in assistance for low-income households . In Wisconsin, this move threatens the Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program (WHEAP), which aids residents in managing heating costs during harsh winters. The end of the winter moratorium on utility shutoffs exacerbates the risk for thousands of families facing energy insecurity.
